Mounts of the palm explained
The mounts are the raised, padded areas of the palm. Palmistry names seven of them after the classical planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Apollo and Mercury under the four fingers, Venus at the base of the thumb, Luna on the outer lower palm, and Mars in between. A fuller mount is read as more of that planet’s quality; a flat one as less.

Cup your hand slightly and look across the palm at a low angle. The pads that rise are the mounts. Four sit in a row at the base of the fingers, one large pad sits inside the life line at the thumb, and one runs down the outer edge of the palm.
The seven mounts and their traditional meanings
Each mount borrows its meaning from the planet it is named for. These are the classic associations.
- Mount of Jupiter
- Under the index finger. Read as confidence, ambition and leadership.
- Mount of Saturn
- Under the middle finger. Read as patience, responsibility and a taste for solitude.
- Mount of Apollo
- Under the ring finger, also called the mount of the Sun. Read as creativity, optimism and love of beauty.
- Mount of Mercury
- Under the little finger. Read as quick wit, communication and a head for deals.
- Mount of Venus
- The large pad at the base of the thumb. Read as warmth, generosity and enjoyment of good company.
- Mount of Luna
- The outer lower palm, also called the mount of the Moon. Read as imagination, intuition and a vivid inner world.
- Mounts of Mars
- Two areas: inner Mars above the thumb and outer Mars below the little finger, with the plain of Mars between them. Read as courage, persistence and temper.
Full, flat or leaning
A high, firm mount is read as that quality being strong in you. A flat one is read as the quality being quiet rather than missing. A mount that leans toward its neighbour is read as the two qualities blending — a Jupiter mount that leans toward Saturn, for example, as ambition tempered by caution.
Hands also differ simply because people use them differently, which is one reason palmistry stays in the realm of folklore.
